Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1296, the Pet Policy Transparency Act, which requires California housing providers to put their pet policies in writing and share them before a renter pays an application fee. Beginning April 1, 2027, the policy has to appear with rental applications, on property websites, in digital advertisements, and on rental search platforms.
Why it matters to multifamily marketers
California apartment marketers will need to update listings, community sites, and paid ads so pet rules are visible up front, or risk refunding application fees to applicants who back out.
